At a Glance

  • Second city with all the amenities at lower cost than Lisbon
  • UNESCO World Heritage riverside district
  • International airport with budget European connections
  • Douro Valley wine country on the doorstep
  • Genuine Portuguese culture, less tourist-saturated

Porto is having a moment — but unlike Lisbon, it hasn’t lost itself in the process. The city remains unmistakably, stubbornly Portuguese: granite-faced, fado-soundtracked, port wine-soaked. The Ribeira waterfront, lined with old wine lodges and cable-car gondolas, is genuinely one of Europe’s most beautiful urban scenes.

Living in Porto

Property and rental prices run 20–30% below Lisbon equivalents. The city centre — Bonfim, Cedofeita, Miragaia — offers beautiful restored buildings. The outer neighbourhoods of Foz do Douro (ocean-facing) and Matosinhos (fishing port turned design district) are particularly popular with expats. The Douro Valley is an hour’s drive east; Spain is two hours north.

Practical Considerations

Porto has two private hospital groups (CUF and Lusíadas), several international schools, and a well-developed expat services sector. The airport connects to 50+ European cities including several low-cost routes that make weekend travel easy.
